Lynchburg Grows. This month’s Land and Table gathering will feature wisdom from local apple expert John Hoskins as we discuss how to plan & design your own apple orchard. Our monthly potlucks are open to everyone and anyone and are a great way to meet other folks involved in the local food movement, sustainable farming, organic gardening, permaculture, homesteading, healthy eating, and agrarian living. Come with your apple questions and your dreams of cultivating your own orchard. Don’t miss it!

WHERE: Lynchburg Grows 1339 Englewood St.Lynchburg, VA 24501 (not far from city stadium)

(Parking: From Englewood st., take the driveway in front of the greenhouses and turn on the driveway to the right. It’s a very obvious parking lot. If you come from Rutherford st., drive up the driveway and take the driveway to the left. again, very obvious parking lot.)

UPDATE! DUE TO SNOW – THE FEB 17 GATHERING HAS BEEN MOVED TO NEXT WEEK – TUESDAY, FEB 24

We’re Back With a New Monthly Meeting Time! We’re back in action for 2015 with a new monthly meeting time (third Tuesdays of each month). Coming up at our next monthly gathering we are going to be eating together, as always, and encouraging one another to get ready for the growing season as we dream and prepare for growing ‘beyond organic’, chemical-free foods for ourselves, our families and our friends (and for some of us: for our customers) in our backyard gardens, on our farms and on our ‘ever-in-process’ homesteads (rural, suburban or urban). Mason Jar Fund Also, since we have always had an open general membership and have operated for years on a scraggly shoestring budget (plus a little elbow grease) we will be putting out the big ole’ mason jar for those of you who would like to make a cash donation at the door each month. Only do it if you want to help us develop Land and Table into something with deeper roots and bigger (or at least juicier) fruit. If you don’t have any cash or don’t feel compelled to help out financially, as always these events will continue to be free and open to everyone. We look forward to seeing you (and a friend) there! Here are some more details about the gathering: Event Details: Growing your own food is one of the most powerful (& humbling) things you can do. Now is the time to dream & prepare for spring. Come join other gardeners, homesteaders, farmers, families, and local food advocates, for a networking potluck and forum to discuss preparing for the coming gardening season! Come to learn. Come to share what you know. A few thoughts to bring with you:

Favorite seed catalogs
Favorite tools
Favorite organic gardening techniques
Favorite veggies you will be growing
Veggies you’d be willing to trade for (but maybe have a hard time growing, etc)
Something new you are trying or would like to try in your garden this year

What You Need to Bring:

A healthy and delicious dish to share
Your own dishware (plate, silverware, cup, etc) (there will be a washing station)

Land and Table Tour: Bramble Hollow Farm | July 2

Bramble Hollow Farm in Montvale (Bedford County) with our local food friends Brent and Anna Wills. A part of the Land and Table network, Bramble Hollow Farm is a small family farm with a focus on sustainable agriculture, premium heritage breeds of pastured pork, poultry and fresh eggs. They have been featured in Natural Awakenings Magazine and are members of the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association, American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, Virginia Association of Biological Farmers, and the Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association. In their own words:

“Bramble Hollow Farm is a small family farm owned and operated by Brent and Anna Wills. The Wills moved to Montvale in 2004 and began transforming the run-down bramble-covered property into what is now Bramble Hollow Farm. Starting with a desire to have a backyard flock of egg layers and a few meat birds, the Wills bought 25 chickens in 2005. Now, seven years later, the Wills will raise over 800 chickens, 40 turkeys, several litters of piglets, and a small herd of cattle on the farm in 2013. Heritage breeds have taken a prominent place on the farm in the past few years and the Wills are proud to raise several heritage breeds of turkeys and chickens and to breed only heritage hogs and cattle. In addition to meat and eggs, the farm also produces wild wine raspberries in July and seasonal produce all summer long. Fresh handmade artisan breads and meat dry rubs are also featured at Chicken Days and at local farmer’s markets. Bramble Hollow Farm is located on 100 acres in Bedford County. It is nestled against the Blue Ridge near Boblett’s Gap close to the Peaks of Otter”

Help the Wills build a new chicken brooder (there old one was destroyed in last year’s derecho)(we will not be completing this project but hope to get as much done as we can).
Extreme, wild Wineberry (related to wild raspberries) picking (this is truly a “wild” edibles adventure so if you are berry picking please wear pants, boots, natural bug repellent and a container(s) to take your bounty home in.

***We also will be welcoming a special guest: a few folks from the News & Advance to our gathering as they bring their cameras and notepads to capture and then tell the Land and Table story to the wider community. So please come out to give them a warm welcome! Land and Table Network: March Gathering

The next gathering for the Land and Table Network is coming up this Tuesday, March 5th. As always, this will be a great chance for networking with like-minded folks in the local food movement, eating together, sharing ideas, and moving towards collaborative action to promote sustainable agriculture, intentional living and local food in the Lynchburg regional area. This time around we will be ‘Dreaming of Spring!’ and discussing our plans for Spring, including organizing a ‘Farm Hop’ series starting in April – where we will move the Land and Table gatherings around to different farms within our network…and who knows, maybe beyond! Last year we made a few attempts at this new format but it never really got off the ground. This year though we hope to use this as a means to highlight the good work of hardworking, local, sustainably-minded farmers and possibly even take it one step further with some crop mobs. Land & Table January 8th Gathering (CANCELLED)

JANUARY GATHERING CANCELLED So, all that being said – we are staying home and recovering and are cancelling the Land and Table gathering coming this Tuesday. I hope you will use this month off to consider your role in the regional local food movement, your neighborhood and your household in advancing healthy, real, local foods and reconnecting with the land. We all have a part to play and I hope in 2013 that many more of us will find where we fit in the renewal of our communities. SAVE THE DATE: NEXT GATHERING FEBRUARY 5th (FIRST TUESDAY OF FEB.) We may be down but we’re not out – our gatherings will resume in February on the 5th (the first Tuesday of the month). We will continue to host the most incredibly delectable potluck in the whole region and provide space to talk about actions we can collectively take to supercharge community resilience, the local food movement, and the growth of our local economy.
