The Land and Table May potluck gathering is coming up next week on Tuesday, May 19th. Come network and be encouraged by other folks in the area involved in sustainable agriculture, natural gardening, homesteading, intentional living, and the local food movement.
We will also be hearing from our good friend Ben Coleman of Mountain Run Farm as he shares insights from a recent trip they took as a family to Costa Rica. Some of Ben’s topics will include what he gleaned about their lifestyle of simplicity in Costa Rica, the freedom of small-scale agricultural enterprises there, and what steps we can take to emulate a similar path of sustainability as families and a community.
As a local community looking to increase our agricultural and economic self-sufficiency, there is much we can learn from communities all over the world.
Get connected and get involved. We look forward to seeing you there!

We’re Back With a New Monthly Meeting Time!
We’re back in action for 2015 with a new monthly meeting time (third Tuesdays of each month). Coming up at our next monthly gathering we are going to be eating together, as always, and encouraging one another to get ready for the growing season as we dream and prepare for growing ‘beyond organic’, chemical-free foods for ourselves, our families and our friends (and for some of us: for our customers) in our backyard gardens, on our farms and on our ‘ever-in-process’ homesteads (rural, suburban or urban).
Mason Jar Fund
Also, since we have always had an open general membership and have operated for years on a scraggly shoestring budget (plus a little elbow grease) we will be putting out the big ole’ mason jar for those of you who would like to make a cash donation at the door each month. Only do it if you want to help us develop Land and Table into something with deeper roots and bigger (or at least juicier) fruit. If you don’t have any cash or don’t feel compelled to help out financially, as always these events will continue to be free and open to everyone.
We look forward to seeing you (and a friend) there! Here are some more details about the gathering:
Event Details:
Growing your own food is one of the most powerful (& humbling) things you can do. Now is the time to dream & prepare for spring.
Come join other gardeners, homesteaders, farmers, families, and local food advocates, for a networking potluck and forum to discuss preparing for the coming gardening season! Come to learn. Come to share what you know. A few thoughts to bring with you:

Favorite seed catalogs

Favorite tools

Favorite organic gardening techniques

Favorite veggies you will be growing

Veggies you’d be willing to trade for (but maybe have a hard time growing, etc)

Something new you are trying or would like to try in your garden this year

What You Need to Bring:

A healthy and delicious dish to share

Your own dishware (plate, silverware, cup, etc) (there will be a washing station)

When: Tues, Feb. <del>17</del> 24 (4-7pm)
4:00 – 5:00 – arriving, arriving late and networking
5:00 – 6:00 – eating and chumming around
6:00 – 7:00 – gabbing, laughing, sharing, conspiring
Location: Mountain Run Farm Showbarn – 1228 Charlemont Rd, sedalia, VA 24526 (near Sedalia Baptist Church).

The Christmas season is nearly upon us and what better way to begin the season than with the monthly Land and Table community potluck. What began two years ago as a monthly forum, has become for many of us, a much-needed rhythm of connection and conversation – a pause in the busyness of life to get together with friends, “neighbors” and other folks of like-mind who share a love of local food, sustainable agriculture and intentional living. What may appear as insignificant, is in my opinion, the seed for a radical shift – from isolation to a more community-focused way of life. We are developing what I call – “potluck culture” – the coming together to bring our knowledge, skills, gifts…and food to the common table – for the mutual benefit of all of us who choose to participate. We really are working towards a revolution of sorts – it is a turning towards one another. It is a re-membering.
And this month the revolution continues as we host a talk with local horse master Marshall Cofer of Triple ‘F’ Farm (see the video below). Marshall is going to be sharing with us his years of wisdom and experience with a short talk on ‘Farm Horse Basics’. If you are curious about what to look for when buying a horse, and other beginning essentials come learn from an elder in the equine arts. In the Spring we hope to have Marshall back out for an actual demonstration and further talks on utilizing horse-power around the farmstead.

This month our computer is on the fritz so there is not going to be a full event flyer but I am excited to say that for our November networking potluck we will be hosting a discussion with Mitchell Bond of Goose Creek Studio on the Bedford Artisan Trail‘s work to yoke farming and the Arts together.
If you are a Bedford food producer or farmer this will be especially important – but even if you do not live in Bedford or are not a farmer this will be an interesting discussion on the relationship between agriculture and the Arts within our communities.

Our community tour of the Lynchburg region’s local food movement continues with a summer evening in the country at Bramble Hollow Farm in Montvale (Bedford County) with our local food friends Brent and Anna Wills.
A part of the Land and Table network, Bramble Hollow Farm is a small family farm with a focus on sustainable agriculture, premium heritage breeds of pastured pork, poultry and fresh eggs. They have been featured in Natural Awakenings Magazine and are members of the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association, American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, Virginia Association of Biological Farmers, and the Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association. In their own words:

“Bramble Hollow Farm is a small family farm owned and operated by Brent and Anna Wills. The Wills moved to Montvale in 2004 and began transforming the run-down bramble-covered property into what is now Bramble Hollow Farm. Starting with a desire to have a backyard flock of egg layers and a few meat birds, the Wills bought 25 chickens in 2005. Now, seven years later, the Wills will raise over 800 chickens, 40 turkeys, several litters of piglets, and a small herd of cattle on the farm in 2013.
Heritage breeds have taken a prominent place on the farm in the past few years and the Wills are proud to raise several heritage breeds of turkeys and chickens and to breed only heritage hogs and cattle. In addition to meat and eggs, the farm also produces wild wine raspberries in July and seasonal produce all summer long. Fresh handmade artisan breads and meat dry rubs are also featured at Chicken Days and at local farmer’s markets. Bramble Hollow Farm is located on 100 acres in Bedford County. It is nestled against the Blue Ridge near Boblett’s Gap close to the Peaks of Otter”

Join us as always for the region’s most amazing potluck, networking, gabbing with new and old friends alike and:

Help the Wills build a new chicken brooder (there old one was destroyed in last year’s derecho)(we will not be completing this project but hope to get as much done as we can).

So please come out to give them a warm welcome! Please note: if you do not want your picture taken make sure to wear a mask or disguise (such as a fake mustache and sunglasses).***

The next gathering for the Land and Table Network is coming up this Tuesday, March 5th. As always, this will be a great chance for networking with like-minded folks in the local food movement, eating together, sharing ideas, and moving towards collaborative action to promote sustainable agriculture, intentional living and local food in the Lynchburg regional area.
This time around we will be ‘Dreaming of Spring!’ and discussing our plans for Spring, including organizing a ‘Farm Hop’ series starting in April – where we will move the Land and Table gatherings around to different farms within our network…and who knows, maybe beyond! Last year we made a few attempts at this new format but it never really got off the ground. This year though we hope to use this as a means to highlight the good work of hardworking, local, sustainably-minded farmers and possibly even take it one step further with some crop mobs.
If you’d like to be a part of the conversation come join us!

I hope this new year finds you and your family thriving. As for me and my tribe we have not been so fortunate with our household of 8 getting hit with nasty coughs and fevers right after Christmas. Our youngest, who is 2 years old and was born with Down Syndrome, developed croup – was having very distressed breathing and so we ended up in Lynchburg in the ER and then an overnight stay. We got home yesterday afternoon but are all still in the process of healing. We appreciate your prayers as I’m sure many of you could use the same in this season of crazy viruses and roller coaster weather.
JANUARY GATHERING CANCELLED
So, all that being said – we are staying home and recovering and are cancelling the Land and Table gathering coming this Tuesday. I hope you will use this month off to consider your role in the regional local food movement, your neighborhood and your household in advancing healthy, real, local foods and reconnecting with the land. We all have a part to play and I hope in 2013 that many more of us will find where we fit in the renewal of our communities.
SAVE THE DATE: NEXT GATHERING FEBRUARY 5th (FIRST TUESDAY OF FEB.)
We may be down but we’re not out – our gatherings will resume in February on the 5th (the first Tuesday of the month). We will continue to host the most incredibly delectable potluck in the whole region and provide space to talk about actions we can collectively take to supercharge community resilience, the local food movement, and the growth of our local economy. Be looking for the February gathering details near the end of January (we will post here on the website, send out via email, and Facebook).]]>
