This is a FREE event but we ask that you RSVP.
The recent freeze of USDA grants and other federal funds by President Trump is having huge impacts on tens of thousands of farms and farm advocate organizations across the nation. Even here in Virginia this unprecedented withholding of promised funding is causing turmoil: impacting how farmers feed the community, do vital research, engage in conservation practices, and much more.
Even Land & Table has been impacted. With a $10,000 federal reimbursement grant recently awarded to us to help in the development of the Lynchburg, Virginia region’s first local food guide. We were in the beginning phases of fulfilling a long term goal. Today, with the funding freeze, there is no clear timeline for when, or if, that grant will ever be honored.
No matter what your political affiliation these are important issues to understand and discuss as we try to find a way forward for struggling farms, confused farmers, and reeling ag-related organizations. Without a swift reversal in policy our food system and many peoples’ livelihoods are being thrown into chaos.
Whether you are farmer or someone who is passionate about supporting local farms, join us for an informative Farmer’s Town Hall Meeting and community potluck on Tuesday, March 18 (6-8pm) at the Sedalia Center cultural arts center in northern Bedford County, Virginia.
Our discussion will be lead by Land & Table Board Member Brent Wills of Bramble Hollow Farm, Wills Soil and Stream, and VABF (Virginia Association for Biological Farming). We will be giving details about how this federal policy shift is impacting farmers, and organizations who support farmers – and will talk about the best ways to respond.
Also, if you are a farmer or ag-related organization who is being impacted please come and let your voice be heard. Whether you are a farmer or just want to know how federal changes are impacting agricultural funding right now you don’t want to miss this.
