In 2008, <a href="https://slowmoney.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"]]>Slow Money Institute founder, Woody Tasch, wrote a book called ‘ Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered‘. The movement to harness economic forces for community renewal continues to today. ‘Nurture Capital’, as Woody Tasch explains in his newest book, is “a vision of finance that starts where investing and philanthropy leave off, giving us a new way to reconnect to one another and places where we live, all the way down to local food systems and the soil.” Simply put, it’s all about local people, investing in local farms and food entrepreneurs, to reinvigorate the health of local community, economy and ecology. Sound too radical, or maybe not needed? We might need to think again.

For many of us, where our food comes from and where our investment money is going seem to have no connection – and our vision of both the world of agriculture and the world of finance is dim at best. But look deeper and it is plain to see we must become more intentional to renew what we’ve lost. Maybe we need to start from the ground up – literally.

Join us Tuesday, October 16 (5-8pm) for a community potluck and discussion with Michael Reilly of the newly formed Slow Money Central Virginia as we discuss bringing the slow money model of local investing in farmers and food entrepreneurs to the Lynchburg, Virginia region. We will discuss core concepts, practical plans of collaboration, and ways to ‘put your money where your mouth is’. Don’t miss one of the most important discussions of the year!

Rootstock is an experimental leadership core for the Land and Table community. The goal of these meetings is to coordinate planning, cast vision, and discuss ways to move forward the Land and Table vision to connect and cultivate the Lynchburg regional foodshed. These meetings do not replace our normal (3rd Tuesday) networking potlucks but we missed last week’s normal gathering due to possible hurricane impact. We will have a normal gathering again next month (October).

This informal meeting and potluck is open to anyone and everyone who cares about building a robust regional foodshed. There will be no formal networking time at these gatherings and discussion will be focused around a set agenda. If you have kids please bring quiet games, art supplies, or toys to occupy them. This meetings agenda will be:

Updates on Land and Table LLC

Summary of the vision for the Lynchburg Area Local Food Guide

The need for a Business Advisory Core for the LLC

The need for a Development Core for the L&T Network

Using Merch to Fund the Foodshed – progress on the partnership with Slow Money Central Virginia

Again, the format will be a little different than our normal monthly potlucks – with a focus on planning, visioneering, and cultivating what we are calling ‘subterranean leadership in the Lynchburg regional foodshed’. For those who cannot make it we hope to record the meeting so you can stay in the loop if interested.

WHERE: Sedalia Center (watch for signs for which room) 1108 Sedalia School Road Big Island, VA 24526

WHEN: Tuesday, September 25 (6-8pm) 6:00-6:30 | Opening and Intros. 6:30-8:00 | Meeting with agenda while we eat.

WHAT TO BRING: – Healthy dinner food to share (please label if possible) – IMPORTANT: Your own dishware (plate or bowl, cup, silverware ,etc) – A quiet game, art supplies, or toys if you are bringing kids (we will be indoors)

PLEASE RSVP SO WE KNOW WHO TO EXPECT > RSVP via the Website / RSVP on Facebook
