The Bedford Area Family YMCA People’s Garden is a unique space where permaculture design and education intersect. It serves as an educational space to teach area students and the wider community healthy eating, hands on skills, food production, and more.

Join us for the Land & Table April potluck and Amish-style frolic* on Tuesday, April 21, 6-8pm at the People’s Garden at the Bedford YMCA. We will start with a time of networking and eating together, tour the permaculture design and it’s features, and for anyone who wants to help, we will lend a hand to do whatever needs to be done in the garden – bring your gloves, the whole family can help!

*”A frolic is when an Amish community… unites to accomplish a big task, one that could not be done alone. Frolics are viewed as fun social activities. Amish farmers may also host frolics to build a barn, make hay, clear a field to make a new garden space, or build a fence around a pasture.”

This is a FREE event, but we ask that you consider financially supporting our work.

Calling all agrarians young and old: small family farmers, homesteaders, homemakers, local food lovers, organic gardeners, regenerative agriculture advocates, chicken whisperers, sheep wranglers, bread bakers, bee keepers, cow bosses, permaculture freaks, and wannabees. Join us for the Land & Table 2026 Vision Forum where we will discuss possibilities for a new year of community, collaboration, and learning.

Join us Tuesday, February 17 (6-8pm) at the Sedalia Center arts center in northern Bedford County for the first Land & Table potluck of the 2026 year. We will be hosting an open forum for existing friends and anyone interested in what Land & Table is all about.

BONUS EVENT: This is a bonus event in our normal monthly event schedule and does not replace our main Bedford potluck on Tuesday, August 19.

Mark and Allison Angelini live on the edge of Mountain Run Farm, family land that is shared by a handful of farm businesses and projects. Between Mark’s consulting business, Mountain Run Permaculture, Allison’s Reed Creek Herbals, organic gardens, a pastured egg business, and Mountain Run Jam, a yearly arts and ag event, they stay more than busy – not to mention little ones in tow! Join us Saturday, August 23 (3-6pm) for a workparty, potluck, and more.

We will be helping Mark and Allison in their gardens and they will give a tour of their pastured laying hen operation. Bring some work gloves and come ready to pitch in.

Exercise is great. It works our bodies, but it doesn’t accomplish any work! What if you could get your exercise and lend a hand to a local farm? Now’s your chance with our Farm Fit Work Party at Mountain Run Permaculture on Saturday, July 13 (5-8pm).

Join us for this workparty + farm tour + potluck. Grab some gloves, bring a shovel or two and help move some mulch on this regenerative farm. Put to action the old maxim: “Many hands make light work”.

Mountain Run Permaculture is the farm and homestead of Mark and Allison Angelini. They are nested in the northwest corner of the larger Mountain Run Farm, a multi-generational, multi-enterprise family farm. The Angelini’s are engaged in a layered approach to permaculture based ecological agriculture that includes: no till herb and vegetable production, bioregional apple production, small fruits and berries, composting systems, edible mushroom cultivation, water harvesting, woodland management, perennial plant propagation, seed saving, commercial-scale pastured egg laying chicken flock, and more.

Root Stock: Agroforestry & Ecological Farm Design – Aug. 20

Join us Tuesday, August 20 (6-8pm) at the Angelini homestead on Mountain Run Farm, for our August Root Stock potluck. These monthly gatherings are a great way to connect with others in the local food movement in the greater Lynchburg region. We will be exploring the basics of agroforestry and ecological farm design with a hands-on talking tour of the property.

Mark and Allison, of Mountain Run Permaculture, are developing an integrative regenerative home and farm ecosystem with gardens, orchards, hedges and more, utilizing ecological design principles. We’ll explore the possibilities for integrating livestock into orchard systems using lightweight, inexpensive infrastructure. See how they utilize American Guinea Hogs and sheep to aide in orchard under-story establishment and maintenance, soil rehabilitation, and the synergy between trees, pasture and animals to produce a myriad of beneficial outcomes.

Don’t miss this opportunity to broaden your understanding of how land can be maximized with natural systems and human needs in harmony. This is a free event but you must RSVP.

It’s one thing to grow a garden in your backyard but replacing your front lawn with a fruit and veggie garden is taking gardening to a whole different level. This growing trend is emerging at a time when the ‘food not lawns‘ movement is challenging zoning laws worldwide as more and more people want to take their food production into their own hands.

Join us Tuesday, August 21 (6-8pm, come at 5pm for extra networking) for our monthly potluck gathering as we are hosted again by Mark and Allison of Mountain Run Permaculture. Last month we saw their incredible work on the Bedford YMCA kids’ educational garden – and this month we will tour the new front ‘yarden’ at their homestead. Get inspired to turn up your sod, get pointers, and learn how to setup an organic garden designed with permaculture principles.

Gardening with the Next Generation – July 17 (Bedford YMCA)

Children and teenagers today inherit the typical U.S. American diet of highly processed, everyday junk foods that has come to characterize the average American’s food habits. Childhood obesity and diet related diseases are becoming all too common. Some children don’t even recognize raw vegetables when they see them because they never encounter them in their daily meals.

But what if we could reverse this trend? What if we could not just inspire kids to eat healthy, but to get outside, away from television, smartphone and computer screens, and get their hands in the dirt? The educational gardening movement is doing just that.

Join us Tuesday, July 17 (5-8pm) at the Bedford Area Family YMCA for the monthly Land and Table potluck and garden tour. We will be hosted by Mark and Allison Angelini as they discuss: their work with the educational garden at the YMCA for the past year, how the garden is impacting the kids who interact with the garden, and educational garden design.

Farm Design: Dream-n-Walk (Great Day Gardens) – June 19

A healthy, productive farm is alot like the natural eco-systems that we live within – it is a complex web of interlocking and nested relationships. Farm design and planning is a critical part of developing the layers of infrastructure and functions needed for creating a sustainable and well formed farmstead. But this is equal parts art and science – passion and practical considerations. And it all starts with dreaming and intentional imagination!

Join us on Tuesday, June 19 (5 – 8pm) at Great Day Gardens in Forest, Virginia as we partner with our young farming friends Michael Grantz and Arden Jones, walking through uncultivated parts of their farm, brainstorming and discussing possibilities for the next phases of their farm development.

We will start with our monthly community potluck (bring healthy food to share), and finish off the evening with the walking conversation (“dream-n-walk”) where you will be invited to share your farm design suggestions and ideas.

Rewilding the Farm: Potluck and Forum – Sept 20

DETAILS: WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? Community potluck, and open discussion with one another and with Claytor Nature Study Center staff on the topic of rewilding, conservation easements and ecosystem restoration in the context of the active rural farm. (Please try to arrive between 5:00 and 5:30 if you would like to participate in the potluck. Come later if you need to.) COME PREPARED:

Bring a lawn chair or folding chair (we will meet outside – in the event of rain we will meet indoors at Claytor).
Bring healthy dinner food to share. Label your dish with your name and food description if you can.
Bring your own dishware (plates, cups, utensils, etc) (A dishwashing area will be provided).
