Join us for the final Land & Table potluck of the year on Tuesday, November 18, 6-8pm at Mountain Run Farm in northern Bedford County.

This meeting will be a ‘friendsgiving’ style potluck open to the public and is a great chance to meet and fellowship with others who are passionate about local food, ecological agriculture, natural health, agrarian living, and returning to a life rooted in the land. Bring a Thanksgiving or Fall themed dish to share – and if you have the gumption bring a special dessert.

We will also have a time of sharing where we will acknowledge the gifts that have come into our life this year. If you’d like to, please come ready to briefly share on what you are thankful for this year as we approach the end of 2025.

Owned by Ben and Carly Coleman and the larger Coleman family, Mountain Run Farm has been a pioneer in the local food movement in the Lynchburg region, modeling pastured based animal husbandry with a focus on raising healthy meats and healing the land. They are Land & Table founders and are known by many to be mentors in regenerative agriculture, and have a passion for community building.

Ben and Carly often host our monthly Land & Table Bedford meeting (meets each third Tuesday of every month). Ben serves as Vice President of the Land & Table Board.

More and more of us are getting into homesteading and self-reliant living, but it can be hard to overcome the challenges. The first (and constant) challenge to overcome is how to make time to manage a small homestead when you have bills to pay and an active, busy life.

Join us on Tuesday, June 17 (6-8pm) at The Little Rustic Homestead in Bedford County (Huddleston) for a community potluck and open discussion on creating a healthy balance between earning a living and living a homesteading lifestyle.

This forum will be lead by Pete Accomando and Krystal Vullo and will feature a brief tour of their homestead setup. Pete will also share some sage advice on managing a small homestead from Joel Salatin that he gleaned from a recent event at Polyface Farms.

Anyone interested in self-reliant living, feeding your own family, and living an agrarian, post-consumer lifestyle. This forum will be relevant for homesteading newbies, experts, and wannabees (rural, suburban, or urban). Come share your questions, thoughts, and best practices!

We are putting the L&T Book Club on hold due to low turn-out at our monthly meetings. But we are discussing possibly reviving it later in the year in a different format.

Our final book for now is the classic book ‘Ten Acres Enough‘ (1864) which tells the story of how the author quit the publishing business and transformed his life by moving his family onto a rural homestead and started farming ten acres of fruits and berries. One of the most influential books of it’s generation, it stands the test of time as a sign of the enduring American ideal of a self-reliant agrarian life.

Are you interested in learning the basics of proper pruning of small fruit plantings on your farm or homestead for a bountiful and naturally healthy harvest?

Join us Saturday, March 2 (10am-2pm) at Laughing Fox Farm in Amherst County, VA, for an in-depth, hands-on ReSkill workshop with farmer Rosemary Urban as she walks you through the practical principles of small fruit pruning with a focus on: blackberries, raspberries, elderberries, mulberries, and blueberries.

Free lunch will be provided: venison stew/chili, cornbread, and drinks. Or bring your own if you have dietary restrictions.

– If you have them, please bring bypass or lopper pruners
– Bring a notebook and pen, or some way to take good notes.

The Land & Table Book Club is a reading and discussion group that meets once a month to discuss topics related to agrarian living, self-reliance, local food, ecological agriculture, local community, homesteading, simple living, and the future of our food system.

For our February meeting we will be discussing: Planning and suggestions for 2024! Please join us this month for a planning session where we’ll be discussing direction for:

• Introducing themes for reading some months, rather than specific titles.
• Possibility of conducting hybrid meetings, with both in-person and virtual participation.
• Suggestions for titles or themes for the next 6+ months.
• Ideas for increasing reach and participation in the book club–such as changing day or time.
• Feedback from former, current, or potential participants.

Anyone is welcome! All you need is a general interest in the topics we will be discussing. So bring some of your favorite books to share, and/or a list of titles or topics you are eager to explore!
