Children and teenagers today inherit the typical U.S. American diet of highly processed, everyday junk foods that has come to characterize the average American’s food habits. Childhood obesity and diet related diseases are becoming all too common. Some children don’t even recognize raw vegetables when they see them because they never encounter them in their daily meals.

But what if we could reverse this trend? What if we could not just inspire kids to eat healthy, but to get outside, away from television, smartphone and computer screens, and get their hands in the dirt? The educational gardening movement is doing just that.

Join us Tuesday, July 17 (5-8pm) at the Bedford Area Family YMCA for the monthly Land and Table potluck and garden tour. We will be hosted by Mark and Allison Angelini as they discuss: their work with the educational garden at the YMCA for the past year, how the garden is impacting the kids who interact with the garden, and educational garden design.

=========================

When: Tuesday, July 17, 2018 (5-8pm) (5:00-5:45) Networking (5:45-6:45) Potluck (6:45-8:00) Garden Tour and discussion with Mark and Allison Angelini This event is rain or shine. The potluck will be under a shelter.

Since 2011 the Land and Table community has continued to grow as we've worked to cultivate a monthly time of networking for the local food movement. Most of our focus has been on the Bedford and Lynchburg area, but starting in June we are now expanding our monthly gatherings to include a second gathering in Appomattox on the first Tuesday of each month, hosted by our friends at the Local APX Market, Don and Nancy Wilk. The Local APX Market is a new food, farm and artisan market with a vision to serve Appomattox and the surrounding area.
Join us for our first ‘Land and Table: Appomattox’ potluck gathering for a time of visioncasting, networking, and community building on Tuesday, June 6 (5:00 – 8:00 pm). This is a great opportunity for ecologically-minded farmers, gardeners and local food advocates near Appomattox to connect and collaborate.

The next Land and Table networking potluck and open forum is coming up next week on Tuesday, May 17 at Mountain Run Farm in northern Bedford County, Virginia. For over three years we have continued to host our monthly potlucks as a space for farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, and local food advocates to meet and encourage one another. These potlucks are not just events for us – but a small way that we can help cultivate community and build, even if slowly, a movement of people who are collectively passionate about transforming our food and farming culture in the Lynchburg, Virginia region. This is a national, if not worldwide, movement with a very local expression – unique to our own place.
“Eating is an agricultural act” as the farmer/writer/poet Wendell Berry so famously said. Eating together is our way of not just remembering this truth but of reminding one another that agriculture is communal work. Too many of us, whether farmer or eater or somewhere inbetween – live a life that is saturated with the American ideal of the lone pioneer – we are carving out a path in business and life that we can claim is our own. But we are, like the the rest of creation, made for the ecology of community – the complex web of relational interdependence that makes up a healthy life. This is the vision for Land and Table – to cultivate the life of community, for a community of land-lovers and food advocates. These are not just potlucks, they are a slow means of cultivating a movement – of growing community. Will you be a part? Join us.

Land and Table exists to cultivate the local food movement in Lynchburg and the surrounding area. If you grow food (or want to) for yourself, your family, or for the community, join us for this monthly regional gathering of agrarians & local food advocates, and connect with folks who are of like-mind. We are a diverse group with a vision for networking sustainable farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, do-it-yourselfers, back-to-the-landers, foodies, families, students and anyone who is interested in “growing local”!
This coming Tuesday, April 19 (5-8pm) we will gather at Camp Sedalia at Mountain Run Farm in Bedford County for our monthly potluck gathering. We will hang out, we’ll eat good food, and share an open forum where we will discuss possible vision for the coming months and what you are getting your hands into as the weather warms.
If you are interested in learning about how to host a Land and Table gathering please come as well – and get the details.

[caption id="attachment_390" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Join us for the one year Land and Table anniversary November 6th![/caption]
Coming this November will mark our one year anniversary of organizing Land and Table gatherings of the regional local food movement! This is an exciting milestone because I think it speaks clearly of the rising interest within the community to revive our connections with the land, the sources of our food, and one another. Many of us are longing to reclaim a life full of meaningful connections and a more intentional way of life that looks to past generations as a source of wisdom. With this wisdom, mixed with new understandings, we are helping shape the future of agriculture, culture and community within our region.
It is no small task that we have gathered monthly for a year. It is a sign to the broader community of the importance of reclaiming the agricultural, cultural and economic health of our community. We have accomplished much this year but if we only have accomplished weaving a network of relationships among those of us involved and interested in the local food movement – that would be enough. For from this relational infrastructure will arise the will and continued action to create a viable and beyond-sustainable food economy in this corner of Virginia.
As we celebrate our one year anniversary we will be reviewing this year’s accomplishments, making plans for our December Christmas party and beginning the process of mapping out our vision for 2013. We are also delighted to have Elli Sparks who has been a Weston A. Price cooking instructor for years in Richmond. Her expertise in healthy, cooking of local real foods will be an asset to our region for years to come. For our November gathering Elli will be sharing a Weston A. Price primer on cooking with traditional real foods and how this shift in our eating can positively impact the health of our families. I read an article recently that Elli wrote in one of the VICFA newsletters titled ‘You Teach! You Teach! You Teach!‘ in which she said:

“We are building community, because no one person is the food revolution.”

We totally agree! This statement is why we do what we do. This is why we are passionate about Land and Table. And we hope you will continue to help us build a community that looks towards transforming our regional foodshed.

When my husband first showed me ‘Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual‘ by Michael Pollan, we were both struck by how small it was, but I was hooked from the first glance. ‘Food Rules‘ is a quick and very enjoyable read filled with witty, quirky sayings that are fun to read yet are full of wisdom.
Michael Pollan really does take all of the confusing messages about food, that come at us from all directions, and simplifies it. While the title says Food Rules, they are really suggestions on how to eat real food and actually enjoy it. He points out that our Western diet is comprised mainly of processed foods, lots of salt and sugar and refined grains, which leads to many western diseases. Scientists are constantly looking for the “evil” nutrient that we can eliminate to be healthy. Americans are bombarded with research that shows this or that nutrient as the BAD one to the extent that we have no idea what is good anymore, what is even real food anymore, much less how to eat it, when to eat it or how much to eat. This a a great book that can teach us all how to relax and enjoy food again. So sit back, enjoy this book, then enjoy your food!! By the way, my favorite is rule #20; “It’s not food if it arrived through the window of your car”.
From the book:

“Make no mistake: our health care crisis is in large part a crisis of the American diet — roughly three quarters of the two-trillion plus we spend on health care in this country goes to treat chronic diseases, most of which can be prevented by a change in lifestyle, especially diet. And a healthy diet is a whole lot simpler than the food industry and many nutritional scientists — what I call the Nutritional Industrial Complex — would have us believe. After spending several years trying to answer the supposedly incredibly complicated question of how we should eat in order to be maximally healthy, I discovered the answer was shockingly simple: eat real food, not too much of it, and more plants than meat. Or, put another way, get off the modern western diet, with its abundance of processed food, refined grains and sugars, and its sore lack of vegetables, whole grains and fruit.”

A few more rules:

#11 Avoid foods you see advertised on television.

#19 If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.

#36 Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.

#47 Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.
