It's a busy time of year for many of us as Winter loosens it's grip and Spring beckons us back to field and garden. But there is always time for good food, community networking and a few good stories. Join us for the next monthly Land and Table potluck on Tuesday, March 21 (5-8pm) at the Sedalia Center in northern Bedford County.
We’re flashing back to kindergarten days with an old-fashioned time of ‘show and tell’. Bring an item from nature, the kitchen, the garden, or farm that is mysterious, unique, fascinating or praiseworthy and bring a story along about it’s history, how it came into your possession or why you think it is wonder-filled. Items can be handmade, found in the wild, uncovered from antiquity or given to you.
Children of all ages are especially invited to give us their best effort. Poems, and songs are also welcome but must be connected to your item that you are showing. This is a friendly crowd so don’t be shy – even if it’s the first time you’ve come!

Winter is finally over and Spring again has come to wake us from our hibernation. After an extended Winter Break – the Land and Table monthly gatherings are again in full swing starting with our Farm Potluck and Reunion Forum on March 15th at Mountain Run Farm*. Every third Tuesday of each month we come together to eat, talk, share and encourage one another in this life of farming, homesteading, gardening, agrarian living, local eating, DIY kitchen food experimenting and the restoration of community connections.
At this month’s Land and Table gathering (which is next week!) we will be eating together and holding a “reunion” forum – catching up after the long Winter and finding out what you are looking forward to this Spring with a few questions (so keep these in mind and come ready to share):

How was your Winter? Name a few struggles and a few joys related to your farm, homestead, garden, or kitchen that you encountered at the end of Fall into Winter.

What are you looking forward to this Spring on your farm, homestead or garden? Anything new?

*We will be meeting at Mountain Run Farm and if weather permits we will gather at Camp Sedalia – if it is too rainy or cold we will meet in the Showbarn. Both the Showbarn and Camp Sedalia are at the same entrance so look for the signs for where to go. We will keep our Winter hours probably one last time this year – so try to come around 4pm but if you can’t get off work in time just come whenever you can make it – it’s better to come late than not at all.

Event Details:

When: Tuesday, March 15 (4-7 pm) (NOTE: come late if you cannot make it by 4pm but please RSVP.)
Come Prepared By Bringing:

Food to share (the focus is on homemade and healthy and…yummy!)

Your own dishware (plates, forks, spoons, cups, etc – for your own use).

Lawn chairs (there will be benches as well).

An optional cash donation of any amount (if you benefit from and appreciate the work of Land and Table)

Dress appropriately – we may be outside.

Location: Mountain Run Farm – Showbarn or Camp Sedalia (entrance will be the same just look for the signs once you pull in) – 1228 Charlemont Rd, Big Island, VA 24526

The Land and Table May potluck gathering is coming up next week on Tuesday, May 19th. Come network and be encouraged by other folks in the area involved in sustainable agriculture, natural gardening, homesteading, intentional living, and the local food movement.
We will also be hearing from our good friend Ben Coleman of Mountain Run Farm as he shares insights from a recent trip they took as a family to Costa Rica. Some of Ben’s topics will include what he gleaned about their lifestyle of simplicity in Costa Rica, the freedom of small-scale agricultural enterprises there, and what steps we can take to emulate a similar path of sustainability as families and a community.
As a local community looking to increase our agricultural and economic self-sufficiency, there is much we can learn from communities all over the world.
Get connected and get involved. We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to the new year friends! We took a break in January but we’re back in action in February with a few important changes.
Life is alot like good farming and gardening – alot of experimenting, figuring out what works and what doesn’t and always trying something new. Land and Table has been much like this as well – it’s never been a clean process of having answers and knowing what to do – but experimenting. learning, cultivating and always returning to original intent – connect people, build community, encourage sustainable agriculture in local farms and gardens.
New Monthly Meeting Time
As a part of the new year we are moving our monthly community potluck gatherings back to Tuesday evenings once a month – third Tuesday of each month. If you have ideas for any community forum topics, workshops, speakers or other aspects of our monthly gatherings please feel free to let us know through our Contact page.
Whether you have been a regular attender or have never attended – we invite you to network with other folks interested in sustainable agriculture, local food, intentional living, agrarian skills, and creating a more resilient regional community. Our next gathering will be Tuesday, February 17th at the newly opened Mountain Run Farm Showbarn/farm store in northern Bedford County.
Mason Jar Fund
Also, since we have always had an open general membership and have operated for years on a scraggly shoestring budget (plus a little elbow grease) we will be putting out the big ole’ mason jar for those of you who would like to make a cash donation at the door each month. Only do it if you want to help us develop Land and Table into something with deeper roots and bigger (or at least juicier) fruit. If you don’t have any cash or don’t feel compelled to help out financially, as always these events will continue to be free and open to everyone.

Back in October of 2013, the front of the News and Advance newspaper blazed the headline ‘Ripe for a Revolution’. Above the headline was a picture of our friend Holly Brown among the broad leaves of her okra. Holly and Troy Brown’s farm, Island Creek Farm, is a jewel among the farms of Bedford County. Their methods and means of building soil and growing healthy vegetables for the surrounding community is truly a revolution in thought and practice. In the world of industrialized agriculture the paradigm is one of fighting against nature – with chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides – but for our friends at Island Creek Farm – they have laid down their chemical ‘warfare’ in exchange for working the land with sustainable principles, learned wisdom, the careful attentiveness of permaculture and the scale-appropriate necessities of human power. Deemed ‘primitive’ by some who have no understanding of bio-intensive forms of agriculture – the work and wisdom that Holly and Troy have invested on their land is sheer brilliance and it shows in their fertile garden of eden that outshines the outworn and overworked soils of many larger farms in our area.
Join us for an evening of networking at this amazing and unique farm with others in the Lynchburg area local food movement – an evening of cultivating community, and inspiration as we meander among the raised beds of Island Creak Farm. Enjoy a healthy foods potluck with fellow gardeners, sustainable farmers, homesteaders, local food lovers, families, neighbors, and new and old friends alike.

Yesterday in the Sunday News and Advance newspaper an opinion piece from their Editorial Board expressed the concern many citizens in Bedford County have after witnessing the June 9th public hearing concerning zoning changes for CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations). With the rush to vote many members of the local community are disturbed and wondering how to respond to what appears to be a lack of transparency and a disregard for public concern. Here is the article from the News and Advance:

By THE NEWS and ADVANCE EDITORIAL BOARD
When leaders in Bedford County decide on a course of action, it’s full speed ahead evidently, no matter what the public thinks.
We’re talking about last Monday’s joint public hearing held by the Board of Supervisors and the county planning commission on proposed changes to the county’s zoning ordinances regarding setbacks for “concentrated animal feeding operations,” or CAFOs for short.
Of “factory farms” in reality.
And they are just that: large buildings for “growing” animals for corporate food processors. Thirty thousand chickens. Thousands of cattle or pigs. Factories in every sense of the word that produce toxic environmental waste.
County residents caught wind of the politicians’ intentions to dramatically reduce setback requirements for these factories and turned out in large numbers, filling the board chamber and spilling into the hallway.
Under the old ordinance, CAFOs were allowed but with setbacks of 1,000 feet for poultry operations and 2,500 feet for other animals. The setbacks were designed to protect neighboring properties, homes, residential subdivisions, streams and public water sources.
But after Monday night and a 6-1 vote by the supervisors, those setbacks have been slashed. Now, instead of 1,000 feet for chickens or 2,500 feet for other animals, it’s 250 feet. Except for homes; chickens and cows can come within 300 feet while for pigs, it’s 500 feet.
As one speaker at the public hearing pointed out, that’s only the length of football field from a home.
And we’re not talking about a bucolic scene of beef cattle grazing in a lush green pasture or chickens scratching and pecking in a wide-open field. We’re talking about thousands of animals being “grown” in large buildings built on a concrete slab, generating thousands of tons of waste either to be collected on site or trucked off.
Certainly doesn’t sound like a “farm” operation to us. Sounds much more like a factory in need of more government and environmental oversight, not less.
That’s what a great many of the people who showed up for Monday night’s public hearing thought so, as well.
Farmers and members of the county’s Agricultural Economic Development Advisory Board at the meeting spoke about the benefits to the county and their livelihoods from such operations: increased economic activity in the county, farms that are more financially stable, farmers able to keep farming.
Other residents spoke about air and water pollution dangers posed by factory farms. They spoke about waste disposal and collection on-site.
To say it was a contentious meeting would be an understatement.
Sensing the public’s split on the matter, Planning Commission member Jeff Burdett quite properly moved to table a decision that night, in an attempt to buy time for further study of the matter.
He lost that motion on tied vote, 3-3, and was next on the losing end of a 4-2 vote to approve the setback cuts.
After the hand-off from the Planning Commission to the Board of Supervisors, it became apparent what the result would be. Supervisor Steve Wilkerson proposed to amend the setback requirements for operations near private homes, but the ball was rolling down hill for approval.
And that’s what happened. On a 6-1 vote with only Chairman John Sharp objecting, the supervisors OK’d the new ordinance.
What would have been the problem with the supervisors taking more time to study the issue, to hold meetings and work sessions with the public and all interested parties? That’s what Sharp wanted to do, sensing the deep split in the board chambers that night and in the public at large.
But apparently his colleagues had already made up their minds. No more public hearings. One and done. That was enough for the majority of the board.
In the end, the process of good government lost Monday night in Bedford. Supervisors had a chance to involve the public in a major decision, working with them and bringing them into the governing process. But, instead, they chose not to.

Well friends, another month is almost spent and a new month is waiting at the gate. So too the seasons. We may still be in the grip of Winter but it’s power is diminishing little by little and the promise of Spring beckons us to start seedlings and prepare for a new time of growing. As all things turn and change we also must keep pace with the nature of things. The Land and Table initiative is changing and growing as well and we will be unveiling some exciting (and very significant) possibilities for the remainder of the year at our upcoming meeting.
Our next gathering is this coming Tuesday, March 4 (from 4:30-7:30 pm) at the Mountain Run Farm saloon/farm store. We will be hosting our usual community potluck and networking time but we will be mixing in a special treat as well – an ice cream extravaganza with homemade, farm-fresh ice cream from Mountain Run Farm! We ask that you bring your normal dish to share for the potluck but we are also asking that you bring a topping to share for the ice cream (remember to keep in the realm of healthy and delicious).
As I mentioned, we have some exciting news to share about changes that are coming to our monthly Land and Table gatherings. With potluck goodness and ice cream still in hand we will also be facilitating an open forum to get your opinion about the proposed upcoming changes. If you have been a regular attender of our gatherings or are a part of our Farm Network we hope you will take time to make your voice be heard as we seek to refine the way we accomplish our mission to cultivate and support the local, ecologically-minded food and agriculture community. Please RSVP via the information below or on the Facebook event page!
Don’t miss this important event and if you cannot be in attendance please watch the Land and Table website for an announcement on the upcoming changes.

We’re back for our second Land and Table gathering of 2014! Our monthly potlucks take place the first Tuesday of each month with a focus on community building, networking the local food movement, learning agrarian skills, and discussing topics related to sustainable agriculture and intentional living.
Our vision for gathering is to provide support and camaraderie for those involved (both producers or consumers) in the local food and sustainable agriculture movement in the Lynchburg regional area – which includes: Amherst County, Appomattox County, Bedford County and Campbell County (also known as Virginia’s Region 2000).
We meet this Tuesday, February 4th for good food, good people and a chance to network with new and old friends alike during these cold winter months. We hope to see you there!

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year everyone! We are thankful for all of you who have been involved in the Land and Table community and the local food movement in the Lynchburg regional area over this past year. It has been a delight to help facilitate connections among local farmers, foodies, families and others who are passionate about healthy eating, sustainable agriculture, intentional living and local community.
2014: A Year of Learning
As we began in December we will continue in this new year – with our monthly community potlucks featuring skill sharing, peer learning or presentations of interest. Our focus for 2014 is on learning but not on mere head knowledge. We will be attempting to explore: traditional skills (that our generation has forgotten – like soap making, plowing with horses, chicken butchering, etc), sustainable modes of agriculture, community resilience, and other essentials for holistic agrarian and intentional living.
We Want To Hear Your Ideas
So…we want to hear from you! If you have any ideas for presentations, speakers or skills you would like us to feature this year at our monthly gatherings please let us know. Bring your ideas on Tuesday, leave a comment in the comment section below this article or contact us.
This Tuesday: Wendell Berry Interview
For our first Land and Table gathering of the year we will be beginning with a presentation of interest. We will be featuring the recent Bill Moyers video interview of Wendell Berry with a discussion afterwards. Mr. Berry is, in my estimation, one of the fathers of the local food movement and an outspoken advocate for relocalizing our agricultural economies and rebuilding local community. I believe he is one of the most important prophetic voices of our times – calling us in this time of crisis back to a life that honors our Creator, His Creation and community.
Don’t Forget!
If you have never been to one of our monthly community potlucks please consider yourself officially invited. If you can’t make it this time please mark your calendar for the first Tuesday of each month. We would love to see you sometime soon!
