Potluck and Permaculture Conversation – July 21

are familiar with permaculture please join us for an open conversation and share your perspective. Joining us in a ‘question and answer’, conversational format will be local permaculture practitioners, Kevin and Vicky Peterson. Kevin spends his work life at Lynchburg College teaching mathematics and serving as the sustainability coordinator. At home, he works with Vicky refining their permaculture design on their homestead in Amherst County. Vicky completed her Permaculture design certification in ’07 and Kevin finished his earlier this year. Raising happy kids, growing healthy food, loving their land and trying to live sustainably is their goal. Land and Table monthly potlucks are open to anyone in the regional area – especially anyone who is passionate about sustainable/ecological agriculture, local food, homesteading, gardening, agrarian skills, farming, growing our local foodshed, healthy eating/living and supporting the local economy. Our monthly potlucks are a great way to network and fellowship with others in your community who are like-minded and interested in community-building. Join us!! (5:00-5:30) Arriving and Networking (5:45-6:30) Eating and Hanging Out (6:30-8:00) Permaculture conversation with Kevin and Vicky Peterson Bring: 1) A healthy dish to share. 2) Your own dishware. 3) Lawn chair or blanket to sit on (there will be some benches as well). 4) An optional cash donation of any amount (to help us grow Land and Table) Location: Camp Sedalia at Mountain Run Farm – pull in to the showbarn at 1228 Charlemont Rd, Big Island, VA 24526 but…keep driving straight back to the camp!

Community Potluck and Beekeeping Basics – June 16

honey bees are in crisis with massive die-offs reported around the nation and world. Colony collapse disorder, widespread pesticide usage, parasites and other threats to honeybees are now being studied by experts in order to understand and stop honey bee decline. Join us as we glean the wisdom of a seasoned beekeeper as he discusses beekeeping basics, talks on-site about the bee sanctuary he has established at Camp Sedalia and highlights what you can do around your home to help save the bees! Whether you are an aspiring or ‘wanna-bee’ beekeeper or simply want to know how you can play a role locally in providing safe haven for these important pollinators – we all need to learn how to ‘keep’ and protect honeybees. Join us for an evening of networking, learning and enjoying the great outdoors. (Note: For those of you who are interested: If we have time for an up-close examination of the hives please consider wearing light colors as bees tend to view darker colors as a threat (think: black bears, etc!). Please leave your dogs or other pets at home. For those of you who are scared of or are allergic to bees please know that we will not be sitting in the midst of bee swarms – the hives are located on the far edge of the camp.)

UPDATE! DUE TO SNOW – THE FEB 17 GATHERING HAS BEEN MOVED TO NEXT WEEK – TUESDAY, FEB 24

We’re Back With a New Monthly Meeting Time! We’re back in action for 2015 with a new monthly meeting time (third Tuesdays of each month). Coming up at our next monthly gathering we are going to be eating together, as always, and encouraging one another to get ready for the growing season as we dream and prepare for growing ‘beyond organic’, chemical-free foods for ourselves, our families and our friends (and for some of us: for our customers) in our backyard gardens, on our farms and on our ‘ever-in-process’ homesteads (rural, suburban or urban). Mason Jar Fund Also, since we have always had an open general membership and have operated for years on a scraggly shoestring budget (plus a little elbow grease) we will be putting out the big ole’ mason jar for those of you who would like to make a cash donation at the door each month. Only do it if you want to help us develop Land and Table into something with deeper roots and bigger (or at least juicier) fruit. If you don’t have any cash or don’t feel compelled to help out financially, as always these events will continue to be free and open to everyone. We look forward to seeing you (and a friend) there! Here are some more details about the gathering: Event Details: Growing your own food is one of the most powerful (& humbling) things you can do. Now is the time to dream & prepare for spring. Come join other gardeners, homesteaders, farmers, families, and local food advocates, for a networking potluck and forum to discuss preparing for the coming gardening season! Come to learn. Come to share what you know. A few thoughts to bring with you:

Favorite seed catalogs
Favorite tools
Favorite organic gardening techniques
Favorite veggies you will be growing
Veggies you’d be willing to trade for (but maybe have a hard time growing, etc)
Something new you are trying or would like to try in your garden this year

What You Need to Bring:

A healthy and delicious dish to share
Your own dishware (plate, silverware, cup, etc) (there will be a washing station)
