Join us for the final Land & Table potluck of the year on Tuesday, November 18, 6-8pm at Mountain Run Farm in northern Bedford County.

This meeting will be a ‘friendsgiving’ style potluck open to the public and is a great chance to meet and fellowship with others who are passionate about local food, ecological agriculture, natural health, agrarian living, and returning to a life rooted in the land. Bring a Thanksgiving or Fall themed dish to share – and if you have the gumption bring a special dessert.

We will also have a time of sharing where we will acknowledge the gifts that have come into our life this year. If you’d like to, please come ready to briefly share on what you are thankful for this year as we approach the end of 2025.

Join us for a potluck and conversation with special guest and champion of the grass-fed beef industry, Dr. Allen Williams of UnderstandingAG on October 17 (6-8pm) at Mountain Run Farm’s Camp Sedalia. This conversation will touch on the importance of building healthy soil on your farm or homestead through regenerative grazing practices.

An expert in grazing methodology and regenerative agriculture, Allen Williams expertise helps restore soil health for improved water retention, reduced runoff, increased land productivity, enhanced plant and wildlife biodiversity, and healthier food. He developed many of the original grass-fed protocols and technologies now adopted by the grass-fed sector.

This conversation will be facilitated by VABF (Virginia Association for Biological Farming) Program Coordinator Brent Wills, and will also include conversation with Ben Coleman of Mountain Run Farm, as Allen touches on local insights from the workshop earlier in the day. Brent will also discuss VABF’s partnership with the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) Soil for Water project, which supports farmers and ranchers in making their land more resilient, their business more profitable and their lives better using regenerative grazing methods.

More about Dr. Allen Williams:

“Allen Williams is a 6th generation family farmer and founding partner of Grass Fed Insights, LLC, Understanding Ag, LLC and the Soil Health Academy. He has consulted with more than 4000 farmers and ranchers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, and other countries, on operations ranging from a few acres to over 1 million acres.

Allen pioneered many of the early regenerative grazing protocols and forage finishing techniques and now teaches those practices and principles to farmers globally. He is a “recovering academic”, having served 15 years on the faculty at Louisiana Tech University and Mississippi State University. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Animal Science from Clemson University and a Ph.D. in Livestock Genetics from LSU. He has authored more than 400 scientific and popular press articles, and is an invited speaker at regional, national, and international conferences and symposia.

Allen and his colleagues specialize in whole farm & ranch planning based on the concept of regenerative agriculture. Their approach creates significant “value add” and prepares the landowner for multiple enterprise/revenue stream opportunities that stack enterprises and acres. This approach allows for enhanced profitability and/or investment value. They routinely conduct workshops and seminars across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.”

The Land & Table book club is a way to engage with the core ideas and topics that are motivating a new generation to create a more resilient food system and vibrant local community life. We’ll be reading books about: eating local, self-reliant living, agrarian culture, growing food, culinary history, community resilience, going back-to-the-land, and more. This is not a book club that will be technical in nature. And if you don’t have a green thumb, you’ll still feel at home. You don’t have to grow your own food or be a homesteader or farmer to enjoy these books. But…you do have to be curious about reviving your connection with the land, with other people, and with the food you eat. And the reality is: tending to those connections is important for all of us.

We meet on the first Thursday of each month and welcome anyone to our meetings – even if you have not read the book we will be discussing
