Fall and Winter is a great time to plan next year’s garden and take inventory of your seed stockpile so you’ll be ready to plant in the Spring.

Join us at Brooklyn Hills Ranch in Amherst County, on Saturday, November 19 (5-7pm) for a seed swap and the final Amherst County potluck of the year.

What do you need to bring to a seed swap? See the checklist below. You can bring:

  • Heirloom or organic veggie seeds to share.
  • Veggie seedlings /small plants to share (please label all plants).
  • Envelopes or small ziploc bags for taking seed.
  • Marker or pen for labeling seeds if not in packet.
  • Flower bulbs, seeds, and seedlings are also welcome.
  • Seed catalogs or garden planning resources for onsite viewing.
  • Seed saving resources for onsite viewing.

Please note: Your seeds, and seedlings / small plants can be home-cultivated or store bought. If you have no seeds or plants to share – come anyway, take seeds home, and financially support the Land & Table seed library before you leave.

]]> Region 2000 Local Government Council (LGC) and its member localities – Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, and Bedford counties, the towns of Altavista, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Brookneal and the city of Lynchburg – have launched an on-line Agriculture & Forestry assessment survey to assess current conditions and identify needs from the perspectives of local producers. The survey window is open for responses through 5PM on May 15th. The survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/promoteag. The survey allows local producers to provide detailed information on specific needs within the Agriculture & Forestry industries of Region 2000. The results of the surveys will assist the LGC, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and localities in identifying needs and developing strategies to promote the Agriculture & Forestry industries in the region.]]>

]]> Is the Lynchburg Virginia region ready for a food hub?In 2014 the Region 2000 Local Government Council (LGC) concluded a broad assessment of our region’s agricultural and forestry economy. Back in January, as a result of the regional assessment, the LGC was awarded a grant to conduct a feasibility study for establishing a Lynchburg area Food Hub. Food hubs have gained alot of attention in recent years and have been established all over the nation in communities wanting to increase the availability of local foods, build their local economy and create economic opportunities close to home for local farmers and food producers. Generally defined*, a food hub is a: “A regional food hub is a business or organization that actively manages the aggregation, distribution, and marketing of source-identified food products primarily from local and regional producers to strengthen their ability to satisfy wholesale, retail, and institutional demand.” Lynchburg Area Food Hub Is a local food hub a viable idea and is it something that would work in the Lynchburg, Virginia region? Join us for a conversation with food systems economic development consultant and researcher Phillip Gottwals of ACDS, LLC (on behalf of the LGC) who is seeking input from local direct-to-consumer farmers and others – about the viability of a local food hub in our area. Learn more about the Food Hub feasibility study and it’s potential regional impact; give your input and help shape the future of the food economy in the Lynchburg area. All are welcome but local farmers and food producers are especially encouraged to come and give feedback.
