Land and Table has the privilege of again being a sponsor and a part of the planning process for the annual farm to table food event Bedford’s Finest Fare on Sunday, September 13, 2015 (4 to 8pm). This second annual Bedford County celebration of local food and drink will feature an expanded lineup of stellar restaurant chefs plus local wineries, a local brewery, local farms, and the bluegrass sounds of well-known band New Standard Bluegrass.
If you did not attend last year it was a phenomenal evening of music and delicious local foods. As a fundraiser for the Bower Center for the Arts, this event is a unique community gathering to celebrate the combined efforts of local farmers, together with local chefs, to produce an amazing small plates feast of mouth-watering culinary offerings. After the success of last year’s Finest Fare – this year will feature an expanded space (from the Wharton Garden to the road – which will be closed off) with room for a hundred more folks than last year (tickets limited to 300) to dine and dance with even more local food, beer, and wine to sample throughout the evening – plus new ticket options for those of you who may just want to come for the music.
Enjoy the hometown spirit of Bedford’s ‘Centertown‘ as you celebrate the local tastes and sounds that Bedford County and the Lynchburg region have to offer. It truly will be an evening to remember.
This year’s lineup of restaurant’s include:

If you are not familiar with the documentary, FRESH it is a hopeful film that bears witness to the emerging sustainable agriculture movement that is seeking to reinvent our food system – literally from the ground up. The movie “…celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are reinventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our plane”
Afterwards, the organizer of Land and Table (and co-founder of the Sustainable Traditions project) will be speaking briefly on the relevance of sustainable agriculture and Creation Care to Christian faith – and local farmers will be present for conversation. View the film trailer below:

Save the date for our next Land and Table community potluck on Saturday, September 13th. Details for our monthly gathering are coming up (sooner than last month’s details which were really late – I promise!).
In the meantime though – we wanted to share with you an event that will be coming up the day after our September monthly gathering. On Sunday, September 14, Land and Table (among other sponsors like Town Kitchen and Provisions, Millstone Tea Room Restaurant, Benjamin’s Restaurant, Fishers Restaurant, and the Bedford Social Club) will be sponsoring a fundraising event, Bedford’s Finest Fare, for the Bower Center for the Arts (which is an incredible non-profit serving the local community). I know many of you reading this may not struggle with poverty. But of some of you may be like me who has recently had hours cut at your job or you may be wrestling with unemployment. For millions of us, the poverty line is always above our heads – and in our current economic meltdown more of us are falling below that line. More and more of us are struggling to make ends meet and on a bad day have trouble putting food on the table. If you have never dealt with this hard reality I encourage you to seek understanding and compassion on an issue that effects more of your neighbors than you think.
Too often I hear people casting judgement on those who deal chronically with financial instability or lack. The assumption often is that these people can choose to lift themselves out of their current situation. While I believe we must rise above an attitude of shame and victimization – the reality is – for many of us there are no easy answers. I was encouraged to hear about a local viewing of a new movie that uncovers what may be hidden to those who are yet unaffected by the economic crisis.
‘The Line‘, a new film from the Christian non-profit Sojourners and the Emmy-Award winning writer and producer Linda Midgett, is shedding light on this expanding reality that too often goes ignored and untalked about:

“From Emmy Award-winning producer Linda Midgett, The Line is a groundbreaking forty-minute documentary uncovering the emerging and entrenched faces of poverty in our country. As Sojourners CEO Jim Wallis puts it, “more and more of our friends are in poverty — in the pews, in our workplaces — through no fault of their own, and they are slipping below the poverty level.”
In the Chicago suburbs, a single dad was laid off from his bank and is now a regular at the local food pantry, trying to make it by with three kids. On Chicago’s west side, deep poverty creates a culture of violence and hopelessness. On the Gulf Coast, a fisherman struggles post-BP oil spill and Hurricane Katrina because environmental crises mean the loss of his livelihood. In North Carolina, we see that hard work and determination don’t always mean success.
What does this mean for the future of our country? How do real-life stories change the narrative about poverty? What can we do about it?”

If you are in the Lynchburg regional area I hope you will be able to make it out to a viewing of ‘The Line’ tomorrow night. See details below. If you are not in the local area please look for a local viewing (or host your own screening) in your town at: the film’s website.

“The newest film from Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Linda Midgett is coming to Lynchburg. As part of a broader campaign to bring light to the new faces of poverty and the aftermath of the recession, national Christian non-profit Sojourners has produced a documentary film called The Line. Other support organizations include Bread for the World, World Vision, the MacArthur Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, Christian Community Development Association, and OXFAM America. This 40-minute film uncovers the emerging and entrenched faces of poverty in our country. The screening is free and open to the public. Space is limited.”

Come out and find out about sustainable farming and gardening, composting, permaculture, soil and water conservation, renewable energy, primitive skills, and more. Visit booths maintained by resource-sharing organizations, and join our new Do It Yourself Renewable Energy Club!
The Gathering is essentially educational in nature and will follow the general model of a skills-sharing event. Vendors and participants will be drawn first from the local community. Vendors are invited free of charge to sell their products provided their vending site holds an educational demonstration or exhibit and that someone is present at the site to answer attendees’ questions.
