<blockquote>We are now taking applications for one intern to join us for the summer of 2016! Here are the full details:
Great Day Gardens is a young and tiny operation in suburban Forest, VA run by Michael Grantz and Arden Jones. We are committed to providing fresh, chemical-free, nutritious food to the Lynchburg and Roanoke area while improving ecosystem health and engaging our community in sustainable agriculture. Currently, we grow an acre of vegetables, raise ducks on pasture, and bake sourdough bread in our state-certified home kitchen. We are looking for an individual join us this summer and get a hands-on education in small-scale farming. This position is ideal for students, stay-at-home parents, someone considering sustainable agriculture as a career path, or anyone who wants to gain an understanding of how food is grown.
The intern will be working alongside Michael and Arden in completing regular farm and bakery duties and will share lunch on the farm. They are responsible for their own <strong>off-site housing</strong>. Position begins in <strong>mid-May</strong> and goes through <strong>August</strong> or beyond, depending on the needs of the intern. The intern will work between<strong> 20 and 40 hours a week</strong> depending on availability, and will receive a <strong>small stipend</strong> between $300 and $600 monthly.
Duties: Garden work including planting, weeding, harvesting, applying soil amendments, cleaning harvest bins and vegetable washing area. Regular care of ducks including collecting eggs, feeding, watering, cleaning bedding, moving electric fence. Interfacing with customers at farmers market and farm share pick-up. Optional: Bakery work including mixing dough, kneading, shaping loaves, and kitchen cleanup. Work in the bakery will be a small part of the intern’s responsibilities if he/she has an interest in this.
Interns will learn about:


<ul>
	

<li>Sustainable vegetable production on a small commercial scale.</li>


	

<li>Soil health and the connection between food and the landscape.</li>


	

<li>Direct marketing of locally grown food.</li>


	

<li>Pastured poultry care and egg production.</li>


	

<li>Sourdough cultures and naturally leavened bread.</li>


</ul>


We are looking for someone who has a lot of energy, a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and healthy food, an open mind, positive attitude, strong work ethic, ability to work long hours in the heat or rain, ability to follow instructions, can communicate well, pays attention to detail, and has a desire to ask questions and learn about the farm system.
